Elena Parmiggiani

Hi! I am Elena. I am associate professor in Digital Collaboration and deputy head of department for sustainability at the Department of Computer Science, Norwegian University of Science an Technology (NTNU), in Trondheim, Norway. Here is my NTNU profile.

I mostly active in the fields of Information Systems (IS) and Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW). I also enjoy taking lengthy detours in Science and Technology Studies (STS), and Participatory Design (PD).

I research sustainable data governance in data infrastructures along three thematic pillars:

  • data and data science in practice
  • algorithmic knowing in data-intensive settings
  • use-centered responsible Artificial Intelligence

Across these themes, I also contribute to the academic discourse in IS and CSCW on how to research data infrastructures empirically and on teaching and learning on the evolution of digital technology.

My research is based on an interpretive research philosophy. I rely on a portfolio of qualitative methodologies to understand how people deal with technology as part of their daily work. I adopt a use-centered approach for exploring how digital systems can better support sustainable design and development.

I have a PhD in Information Systems from NTNU, based on a trans-disciplinary and empirical analysis of digital infrastructures for environmental risk assessment during oil and gas operations. I also have a MSc and a BSc in computer engineering from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Italy).

I am currently (2025) Editor in chief of the Scandinavian Journal of Information Systems and Associate Editor at the CSCW Journal and the European Journal of Information Systems (EJIS).
